One of the things I dreaded the most about coming to America was my ability to survive a full blown winter since this Guyanese girl felt cold at the slightest “seawall breeze” that passed her way back home in Guyana.
Winter came and went and I survived, but I also learnt to appreciate its beauty and the new things that can be experienced here.
My visit to the Saugerties lighthouse helped with my appreciation for winter. Located on the Hudson river at Esopus creek and established in 1835, the Saugerties lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the Hudson River Valley and the Catskill Mountains.
From the half mile nature walk (it was quite the walk) to get to the lighthouse, to the antique coal stove that offers a welcoming warmth at the parlour entrance and the decades old cast iron griddle that offers up the best home made pancakes; everything about the time spent there is quite the experience that left an imprint on my mind and helped me to appreciate that sometimes new things can be just awesome.
Standing in the viewing deck that houses the lamp that serves as a beacon for ships on the Hudson, in the frigid cold ,raised all my senses and I was drawn into the beauty and majesty of the frozen Hudson and I became fully aware of my surroundings and the company I was in and that moment helped me to recognize it for what it represented….something new that I was learning to love and enjoy!
